The Harijan Panchayat Committee (HPC) has sought two months’ time to appoint a new president for continuing the discussion with the state government for the relocation of 342 families from Them Iew Mawlong.
HPC secretary Gurjit Singh said that the colony at Them Iew Mawlong is not only about government employees but it is about people, who have been staying there for the past 200 years.
The state government has decided to hold the another round of meeting with the Harijan Panchayat Committee (HPC) on June 7, for take a final call on the relocation of 342 families from Them Iew Mawlong even as it maintained that there will be no consideration for "illegal settlers".
The Hynniewtrep Youth Council (HYC) on Thursday questioned the decision of the state government to seek clarification in regards to the 342 families of Them Iew Mawlong from the same department, which had replied to information sought under RTI Act, 2005 that there are only 194 families identified as government employees
The State government has directed the Shillong Municipal Board (SMB) and Urban Affairs department to reverify and come back with clarification in regards to a recent RTI reply, which indicated that 148 of 342 families of Sweepers’ Colony are illegal settlers at Them Iew Mawlong.

Deputy chief minister Prestone Tynsong on Monday lashed out at the opposition Voice of the People Party (VPP) for playing politics on the issue of relocating the 342 families from Them Iew Mawlong.
