Power Minister Abu Taher Mondal on Friday said rehabilitation and retrofitting works have to a great extent improve the Umiam Dam and the bridge even as he informed that very soon the government will come up with an alternative road to Shillong.

Meghalaya government is actively trying to find an alternative route bypassing the Umiam dam for vehicles to reach the state capital.

The travellers can use an alternate route to avoid the jams, the route is longer, but the travellers are bound to enjoy the scenic beauty along the road.

The present works are being taken up under Dam Rehabilitation Improvement Project (DRIP). The main objective of DRIP are rehabilitation and improvement of dams and associated appurtenances safety institutional strengthening. The major works under DRIP includes Drilling and Grouting of Dam, Crack repairing and Hydromechanical works.
