Task Force set up to counter illegal brick kilns in Garo Hills

Tura, March 7: In view of the rise of illegal establishment and operation of brick kilns within the District and to stop this illegal activity, the District Magistrate, West Garo Hills, Tura has notified the establishment of Block Level Task Force to Combat Illegal establishment of Brick kilns.

The composition of the District Level Task Force comprises of the Block Development Officer as the Chairman, Representative from the Meghalaya State Control Board, Shillong as Member, Joint Director, Directorate of Mineral Resources or representative as Member, District Transport Officer or representative as Member, Deputy Labour Commissioner or representative as Member, Officer Incharge Police Station or Beat House or Out Post as Member and Forest Ranger as Member.

Further, the order stated the duties of the Block Level Task Force are to identify areas within Block where illegal brick kilns are operating or are being established and to monitor these areas regularly to detect any new unauthorized activities. To conduct thorough investigation into the legality of brick kilns operating within the block and take enforcement action against those found operating illegally, including issuing warning, imposing fines, or initiating legal proceedings for closure.

As per the order, the task force should maintain detailed records of all identified brick kilns operating within the block, including their legal status, compliance with regulations, and any enforcement actions taken and also to prepare regular reports on the status of illegal brick kilns and actions taken by task force and submit to the office of the District Magistrate every 15 days.

The order also mentions to engage with the Nokmas/ Headman, local communities, VEC Secretary/Presidents, stakeholders and non-governmental organizations to raise awareness about the negative consequences of illegal brick kilns on the environment, health and livelihoods and encourage community participation in reporting illegal activities and supporting enforcement efforts.

Further, the task force should conduct periodic reviews of the task force’s activities and effectiveness in addressing illegal brick kilns and also identify areas for improvement and implement corrective measures to strengthen enforcement efforts and achieve long term compliance.
