Guwahati, Sept 16: NIT Silchar is in the eye of the storm once again after a student was found dead inside his hostel room on the campus on Friday in Assam’s Cachar district. The campus was gripped with tension for the entire night on Friday as students protested against the administration, forcing police to lathi-charge the students to bring the situation under control.
According to sources, his body was found hanging in his hostel room. The deceased was a third-year student of Electrical Department.
Sources said he had many backlogs and after failing to clear his backlogs, he was in depression for last few months, which is being cited as the reason for his drastic step.
“He (the student) met with NIT Academic Dean Bonoy Krishna Roy and requested him to appear in the next exams but he declined his request. After that he got depressed and committed suicide,” said a student of the Institute.
The students of NIT Silchar staged massive protest inside the institute against the administration of the premier Institute for introducing new guidelines for students, but mostly targeted towards BK Roy. They also ransacked the official residence of the Dean and vandalised several vehicles, police sources claimed.
Sources said students even attempted to set Roy’s residence on fire using an LPG Cylinder.
The police had to resort to using mild force to disperse the agitated students after a student hit the face of the Superintendent of Police (SP), Numal Mahatta, with a water bottle. In the lathi charge, many students were injured and taken to Silchar Medical College and Hospital for treatment.
Talking to media, Dilip Kumar Baidya, Director of NIT Silchar said, “In the evening, the alleged suicide happened, we are all very sad about it. We responded promptly.”
He noted there were some issues with the deceased student right from the beginning of 1st year. “There were some back logs and because of these back logs he could not move with his batch, which might have created depression and led him to take this step,” he said.
His further said the friends of the student should have brought his depression to the notice of the faculty, who are always available.
However, the agitated students claimed that the director did not meet them despite waiting for him throughout the night.
“Yesterday we waited the whole night for NIT Silchar Director but he didn’t meet with us and declined all our requests. Every day the Institution has been introducing new guidelines for students. The students are not happy with the behaviour of the administration of NIT Silchar,” said a student.
Mentionably, NIT Silchar keeps finding its way to news due to violent campus activities and was lately in limelight for assault of students.
