Shillong, April 23: What started as a peaceful day for tourists riding ponies through the lush meadows of Baisaran Valley in South Kashmir’s Pahalgam quickly turned into a nightmare on Tuesday. Heavily armed terrorists opened fire on the unsuspecting group, killing at least 28 people, including foreign nationals, and injuring many more.

The attack took place around 2:30 PM when militants emerged from the dense pine forests surrounding Baisaran — a popular tourist destination often called the “Mini Switzerland of Kashmir” for its breathtaking views and rolling green pastures. The sudden burst of gunfire triggered panic and chaos, with tourists screaming for help, some covered in blood, while others lay still on the ground.

Baisaran, located just 5 km from Pahalgam town, is accessible only by horse ride and is a favorite among tourists for its serene atmosphere, scenic pony trails, and panoramic trekking routes. Over the years, it has drawn thousands of visitors annually and even served as the backdrop for several Bollywood films in the 1980s.

Known for its picture-perfect meadows and starlit camping sites, the valley offers something for every traveler — from peaceful picnics to adventurous treks and horseback rides through its rolling landscapes. That serenity was shattered in an instant.
In the wake of the attack, airlines have quickly issued travel advisories. Indigo stated: “We have extended waivers for rescheduling or cancellations for travel until April 30, applicable to bookings made on or before April 22. Additionally, we are operating two flights today, April 23, to and from Srinagar, one each from Delhi and Mumbai.”
Air India Express also responded with flexible options for passengers, “You may cancel and receive a full refund, or reschedule your flight at no additional cost within 7 days of the original travel date,” their statement read.

Meanwhile, security forces have stepped up operations across Jammu and Kashmir. The CRPF and BSF have reinforced deployments at 15 sensitive locations, and administrative movement in the region has been restricted. Emergency medical teams and doctors have been rushed to Pahalgam to assist local hospitals in handling the casualties.
