The 35th best college in India is right here in Northeast India

Guwahati, Aug 13: When we talk of best colleges in the country, the names of Hindu, St Stephens, Miranda, Presidency comes to mind quickly.

Is there no college from the Northeast which is in the best colleges list in the country?

There is but many have not heard of it- the Pachhunga University College Aizawl which is the 35th best college in India. This was disclosed in the National Institutional Rankings Framework (NIRF) 2024 rankings which was released on Monday for universities and colleges across the country.

In 2022, it was 45th, in 2023 it was 34th in best colleges rankings.

One of the distinctive features of the college is its unique setting with a sprawling 760 acres campus. Its lush-green vegetation, the result of 60 years of nurturing the campus and wide-open space with luxuriant natural vegetation provides an excellent atmosphere of learning. The college is on the south east side of Aizawl. There are 27 students from outside Mizoram and 11 students from outside the country who are studying at the college.

More than 80 per cent of the buildings iu the college have ramps and more than 80 per cent of the buildings have specially designed toilets for handicapped students. The college motto “Learning & Service” is the guiding beacon of our endeavor in striving for academic excellence in higher education and humanitarian services. The college has a village adoption scheme too

Pachhunga University College (PUC) is a public institute in Aizawl, Mizoram, and the only constituent college of Mizoram University, a central university established by an Act of Parliament of India. Founded in 1958 as Aijal College, it is the oldest and largest college in Mizoram, by enrolment and campus size. It started with intermediate of arts (equivalent of higher secondary education) courses, and later expanded to bachelor degrees in arts, commerce and science. With the opening of master’s degree courses in Mizo, philosophy and life sciences, it became the first postgraduate college in Mizoram.

The college is named in honour of Pachhunga, a leading businessman and politician, who funded its initial management in 1962. It became university college when the North Eastern Hill University incorporated it as its only constituent college in 1979. The college is also ISO 9001:2015 certified since 2018.
