Ampati, Aug 7: Amidst the colourful threads of tradition and the rhythmic clatter of looms, the 9th National Handloom Day was celebrated with unparalleled enthusiasm at the serene campus of Sericulture & Weaving, Garobadha in South West Garo Hills on Monday. The event saw the heartwarming felicitation of weavers who have gracefully crossed the age of 70, alongside the joyful distribution of a vibrant array of yarns to the talented artisans.
Organized by the District Handloom Office, West Garo Hills, the gala affair was graced by the presence of the Additional Deputy Commissioner, Ampati, Y.W. Momin, as the chief guest. Alongside District Handloom Officer, Tura and Ampati, G.R. Marak, and District Handloom Officer, Williamnagar, Deepak Hajong, a multitude of officials from the department joined hands to make the celebration truly memorable. The event was also adorned by the colourful presence of hundreds of weavers, hailing from various corners of the district.
The roots of National Handloom Day trace back to the historic Swadeshi Movement, when India stood united to boycott British goods and endorse indigenous craftsmanship, especially in handloom textiles. However, it was on August 7, 2015, that the day was officially declared as National Handloom Day by Prime Minister Narendra Modi. The inaugural celebration took place at the illustrious Madras University in Chennai, igniting a vibrant tradition that continues to flourish.
This remarkable day pays homage to the timeless artistry of handloom weaving in India, a legacy that has woven its way through centuries, intricately threading the nation’s culture and economy together. The event aims to salute the remarkable contribution of handloom weavers, whose creativity and craftsmanship are not only cherished locally but also cherished globally, as their masterpieces are exported to foreign lands.
In a touching gesture, ADC Y.W. Momin personally presented awards of appreciation to six weavers who have surpassed the remarkable age of 70, continuing to weave their magic, inspiring the younger generation of artisans. She expressed profound gratitude to these artisans for their dedication, as their deft hands and artistic vision have not only enriched the state but have also embroidered the nation’s heritage.
As part of the festivities, the air was filled with delight as Eri and Silk yarns were generously distributed among the registered weavers from all corners of the district, providing them with a kaleidoscope of colours to weave their dreams.
The celebration served as a reminder that amidst the whirlwind of modernity, the magic of handloom remains timeless and indispensable, weaving a tapestry of culture, heritage, and unity across the nation.
