Three arrested for attempting to steal scooty in Shillong

Shillong, Feb 17: The City police arrested three individuals for attempting to steal a scooty near Keating Road. The arrest was made possible due to police patrolling in the city.

According to East Khasi Hills SP Vivek Syiem, the Sadar PS patrol team spotted the suspects at around 4:50 AM on Saturday. They had arrived in a Swift tourist taxi (ML 04 C 7163) and were caught trying to steal a scooty (ML 05 AC 8352) by tampering with its ignition wires. One suspect, Ribellang Phyllei (25) from Biar, Block Laskein, West Jaintia Hills, who was driving the Swift, was immediately apprehended, while the other two managed to flee under the cover of darkness.

However, a checkpoint at Mawryngkneng later intercepted the fleeing suspects—Empyrkhat Dhar (21) from Saphai, West Jaintia Hills, and Steven Syngkon (19) from Iaw Thymme, West Jaintia Hills—who were attempting to escape towards West Jaintia Hills.

Police recovered several items from their possession, including two helmets, two plastic bottles filled with petrol, a set of screwdrivers, multiple spanners, an Allen wrench, a T-handle hex key, a T-handle Torx key, ₹6,100 in cash, and three mobile phones.

A case has been registered under Sadar PS Case No. 46(2)2025 U/S 305(b)/324(4)/111(2)(b)/3(5) of the BNS.

The police are also investigating their possible involvement in other bike theft cases in the city.
