Shillong, Nov 5: Naba Bhattacharjee, Chairman of the State Expert Appraisal Committee on Environment (SEAC) and representative of the Ministry of Environment, Forest, and Climate Change announced that three mining projects have submitted their Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) and Environmental Management Plans (EMP) for appraisal next week.
“We had issued the Terms of Reference in March 2024 detailing the requirements for the EIA and EMP preparation, including submission of a public hearing report conducted by respective District Commissioners” Bhattacharjee said.
The three projects—one in West Khasi Hills (WKH) and two in East Jaintia Hills (EJH)—submitted their reports to the Ministry’s PARIVESH portal on October 22. Each submission included comprehensive environmental plans from NABET-empaneled EIA consultants, focusing on safeguard measures, overburden management, and related environmental factors.
“These projects are set to conduct scientific mining with full compliance to environmental standards as outlined by the Ministry of Environment and approved by the Ministry of Coal,” Bhattacharjee added.
He also mentioned that a fourth project, located in South West Khasi Hills (SWKH), has been referred to the Central Appraisal Committee because of its proximity—within ten kilometers—to the Bangladesh border
