Timber mafia thrives in Arunachal despite crackdown

Must read

Dibrugarh, April 23: The timber mafia in Arunachal Pradesh continues to operate with impunity from the Changlang and Namsai districts, reportedly by managing and influencing key authorities.

According to sources, every day, trucks laden with valuable logs travel unchecked along national highways. Despite repeated interventions, state efforts appear ineffective as illegal logging persists openly.

“The mafias use high-powered machines to fell trees deep inside the forests,” a resident said.

“These logs are then transported through highways in broad daylight. The once-lush green cover of Arunachal Pradesh is fast disappearing due to rampant deforestation, ” the resident said.

Residents further alleged that numerous sawmills function openly, and despite widespread awareness, no meaningful action has been taken.

“The government knows everything but chooses to remain silent,” the resident added.

Insiders suggest the entire operation thrives due to an unholy nexus between sections of the forest department, local police, and the timber mafia. The network is reportedly backed by powerful politicians and influential figures.

In response to recent media reports, Arunachal Pradesh Forest Minister Wangki Lowang has ordered an inquiry into the smuggling racket.

However, locals remain skeptical. “The inquiry is unlikely to yield results,” said another resident.

“We’ve seen this before.”
