Agartala, Feb 1: TIPRA Motha, which is make its debut in this upcoming assembly polls in Tripura, seems to be positive and their party leaders are campaigning hard to win the elections. The main objective of the regional political party TIPRA Motha is a separate state, as Greater Tipraland for the indigenous people and tribes of Tripura.
The Pradyut Kishore Deb Barma led party is contesting in 42 of the total 60 seats in the February 16 Tripura assembly polls.
Around 20 of these are tribal seats while the remaining are non-tribal ones. Tipra Motha is also looking to garners the non-tribal areas of the state.
TIPRA Motha had won the Tripura Tribal Areas Autonomous District Council (TTAADC) elections in 2021.
This Council’s ambit of control covers over two-third of Tripura’s 10,491 sq km area with a population of about 1.2 million people, of which 90% are tribals. This accounts for 20 assembly seats.
In 2018, the BJP contested in 11 seats in the tribal areas while its ally, the Indigenous People’s Front of Tripura, contested in nine. While IPFT won eight seats, the BJP wrested 10 seats and two seats were bagged by the CPI-M.
Also, TIPRA Motha has become the first political party in the northeast to start crowd funding ahead of Tripura assembly polls.
TIPRA Motha chief Pradyut Deb Barma said, “Tipra Motha is a new party, which was not supported by big businessman. BJP supported by Ambani and Adani, Congress supported by big man while CPI(M) supported by Kerala government. TIPRA Motha don’t compromise with any party, not given money, so today we are contesting without alliance.”
