Shillong, Feb 16: Mendipathar MLA and National People’s Party (NPP) leader Marathon Sangma has dismissed the Trinamool Congress (TMC) as a political force in Meghalaya, citing a steady exodus of grassroots workers who see no future for the party in the state.
“TMC has no future in Meghalaya, and the reality is evident as grassroots workers are leaving in large numbers, knowing they will have no impact in the coming general elections,” Sangma asserted.
Drawing from his political experience, Sangma likened TMC’s current situation to the downfall of the Congress in Meghalaya, which he attributed to internal power struggles between Dr. Mukul Sangma and Vincent Pala. He noted that the Congress had already begun to fracture, with some MLAs defecting to TMC while others remained in a weakened party.
Marathon Sangma defended his decision to align with the ruling NPP, emphasizing that it has ensured significant infrastructural development for his constituency, including road construction and the establishment of a new college. He praised Chief Minister Conrad Sangma’s leadership, calling him a “dynamic and visionary leader” driving Meghalaya’s progress.
Amid speculation about a possible return to Congress, Marathon Sangma dismissed the idea outright.
“I have nothing to do with Congress anymore. I will continue with NPP,” he said, labelling Congress a “sinking ship” plagued by internal conflicts. He pointed out that many former Congress stalwarts, including six ex-cabinet ministers, have already joined the ruling coalition.
While acknowledging the presence of former Congress leaders like Prestone Tynsong, Ampareen Lyngdoh, and A.T. Mondol in NPP, he insisted that his decision was not about party loyalty but about ensuring continued development for his people.
Sangma underscored that being in the opposition would mean neglect for his constituency, lacking essential infrastructure such as good roads and quality education. He believes the electorate favours stability and progress and is confident that the NPP-led government will retain power in the upcoming elections.
