Tourist taxi association demands only local tourist taxis to do business in tourist spots

Shillong, July 9: The All Khasi Meghalaya Tourist Taxi Association (AKMTTA) submitted a memorandum to Tourism Minister Paul Lyngdoh seeking a ban on vehicles registered outside the state from transporting passengers to tourist destinations.

“AKMTTA has passed a unanimous resolution on July 1 to request the government to issue an order to ban all kinds of vehicles from other states to carry passengers from Shillong to different tourist spots of our state,” the memorandum to Lyngdoh said.

In its memorandum, AKMTTA shared statistics based on a survey it conducted, and highlighted that out of the 5120 vehicles registered in Meghalaya, 4014 often go without passengers on a daily basis and suffer losses.

This loss, the association said, is because of vehicles registered outside the state transporting passengers to tourist destinations after bringing passengers from outside the state.

AKMTTA further highlighted that more than 3543 vehicles bring tourists into the state on a daily basis and 2437 of these being from outside the state. This survey was conducted by the association based on the direction of the Director, Tourism, the memorandum read.

The association emphasized that while tourist taxis from other states can bring tourists into the area, they should not have the privilege of transporting them to various tourist spots.

“Vehicles registered from outside the state are free to bring in passengers to our state, but it is the right and duty of local tourist vehicles to usher them to tourist spots,” the association said.

“We therefore strongly urge the government to regulate the situation with immediate effect,” AKMTTA said.
