Hiring certified local guides strongly recommended
Shillong, April 15: With the arrival of the monsoon season and a growing number of tourists visiting Sohra (Cherrapunjee), the Office of the Sub-Divisional Officer (Civil), Sohra Civil Sub-Division, has issued a safety advisory to ensure a secure and enjoyable experience for all visitors.
Famous for its majestic waterfalls, rolling hills, lush green valleys and dramatic cliffs, Sohra attracts thousands of tourists each year. However, the terrain and natural features of Sohra can turn hazardous, especially during the rains, prompting the local administration to urge visitors to exercise caution.
In the advisory, the administration highlighted the need for extreme care around water bodies, cliffs, jungles and other high-risk areas. It warned that strong currents and sudden surges in rivers and streams could be life-threatening, especially in places not designated for swimming. Hidden rocks, deep pools and powerful undercurrents often pose serious dangers, and children, in particular, should be kept under close supervision.

The advisory also said that the risks associated with steep places and cliffs, noting that unstable edges and loose rocks can lead to falls. Visitors were urged to stay on marked trails and avoid leaning over cliff edges, as sudden slips or strong gusts of wind could result in accidents. Wearing sturdy, non-slip footwear is essential, as wet and uneven surfaces are common during this season and can easily cause slips.
Tourists were cautioned against venturing off designated paths, as the vegetation can obscure dangers like uneven terrain or wildlife. In addition, the public has been advised not to touch unknown plants, some of which may be toxic or thorny.
To ensure a safe and guided experience, the Sohra administration recommended hiring certified local guides who are trained to navigate the varied terrain of the region. Tourists were reminded to strictly follow all warning signs and barriers, which are in place for their protection. With the monsoon rain making many slopes slippery and some places impassable, checking regular weather updates is also advised.

To further improve safety, the administration has laid down a set of protocols that must be followed at all tourist sites. These include the deployment of trained lifeguards and safety personnel at water bodies and other high-risk zones, installation of secure railings at cliffs and viewpoints, and clear trail markings in jungles and hilly areas to prevent disorientation. All sites are required to prominently display first aid and emergency procedures, and ensure that rescue equipment, particularly at water bodies, is readily accessible.
In case of emergencies, visitors have been provided with important contact numbers. They can reach the Sohra Police Station at +91 76389 00103 or the Sohra Community Health Centre at +91 88373 60612.
