Tura, March 22: In a dramatic rescue operation, West Garo Hills police rescued a kidnapped cattle trader and killed one of the abductors and arrested two others early on Friday morning, all within 24 hours of the adduction taking place.

The operation was launched after a resident of Bangalkata village in Phulbari reported the abduction of his father, Ruvi Hussain, to Damal Asim Police Station. Hussain was abducted on Thursday while transporting cattle near the Dananggre Songma Reserve Forest by three armed men.

In response, a joint team comprising of personnel from West Garo Hills District Police, SF-10 commandos, and police units from Dadenggre and Damal Asim was quickly assembled, and a search and rescue operation was launched. In the early hours of Friday, the team tracked the kidnappers to Dipogre Asim Chiring under Damal Asim jurisdiction.

However, upon reaching the location of the hideout, the police team came under heavy fire from the abductors. “The kidnappers opened fire on the police team, leading to an exchange of gunfire in self-defence. Subsequently, two injured kidnappers were apprehended, while abducted victim Ruvi Hussain was safely rescued,” informed Abraham T Sangma, the Superintendent of Police of West Garo Hills.

During the gunfight, one of the abductors, identified as Raksan M Marak, sustained bullet wound in his abdomen. He and the rescued victim were provided with medical treatment at Dadenggre. But, owing to the serious injury, Raksan was referred to Tura Civil hospital for medical treatment, where he was declared “brought dead” by the doctors.

During the search operation of the abductors’ hideout, Police recovered a country-made shotgun, a knife, and a small puma bag.

The two arrested individuals have been identified as Chingsan M Marak and Sengchuang M Sangma alias Miksong. Notably, Sengchuang is a former member of the now-disbanded ASAK militant outfit and had been released on bail from Tura jail less than a month ago after serving a two-year sentence.

Meanwhile, West Garo Hills District Police have urged the public to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activity or presence of unknown individuals to the nearest police station. Traders and locals have been advised to exercise caution when traveling to remote areas and to seek police assistance when necessary.

For emergencies or to report suspicious movements, residents may contact the Police Control Room in Tura at 8837423053 or 9089199064.
