Boko, November 4: In a distressing incident, the carcasses of two wild elephants were found in separate locations under the West Kamrup Divisional Forest in Kamrup District on Monday. Villagers from Pakharapara and surrounding areas under the Singra Range Office in Boko discovered the body of a young male elephant, estimated to be under ten years old, in a paddy field near Pakharapara village. They promptly informed the state forest department.
Singra Forest Range Officer Bhargab Hazarika, along with a team, arrived at the scene. “The cause of death is not yet confirmed,” said Hazarika. “We’ve requested a post-mortem examination by a state veterinary doctor. Initial information suggests electrocution, an illegal method sometimes used by locals to deter elephants from farms.” Materials suspected to be used for electrocution were reportedly found near the carcass.
In a similar incident, a second elephant carcass was found on Monday in a paddy field in Dhangargaon, under the Kulshi Forest Range. The deceased elephant, a male around 25 years old, was discovered by villagers who alerted the forest authorities. Kulshi Forest Range Officer Kankan Jyoti Kaushik also suspects electrocution but awaits the post-mortem report to confirm.
The discovery has raised concerns among local conservationists, who blame increasing encroachment on forest lands for the rise in man-elephant conflicts. Many have urged the forest department to act against illegal activities in protected areas to help mitigate these tragic encounters.
