Agartala, Aug 12: Amid high security, the counting of votes for Tripura’s three-tier Panchayat elections has started on Monday across the state.
Meanwhile, security has been beefed up around all 35 counting centers to ensure a smooth and fair process.
The election, which witnessed robust voter turnout with more than 80 percent voting, is seen as a significant indicator of rural political dynamics in the state.
State paramilitary forces, along with the state police, are stationed at key points to prevent any untoward incidents.
The Panchayat elections, which were held in a single phases, saw participation from all major political parties – ruling BJP and TIPRA Motha beside the opposition CPIM and Congress in a tight contest for control of rural Tripura despite victory of more than 70 percent seats uncontested by the ruling party.
In the presence of election officials, representatives of various political parties, and security personnel, the seals on the strong room doors were broken.
The ballot boxes were then transported to the counting halls under strict observation and security.
“The counting has been peaceful so far. No untoward incident has taken place. We have not received any complaints so far,” said an official.
4550 out of 6370 seats in gram panchayat bodies went uncontested.
1819 seats in the gram panchayat bodies had seen contest, out of which BJP has put up candidates in 1818, CPIM in 1222, 731 from Congress and TIPRA Motha 138 apart from some independent candidates.
The 20 out of 116 Zilla parishad seats went uncontested while polling was held on 96 seats in the three-tier panchayat polls on August 8, 2024.
