Agartala, Jan 14: Tripura Chief Minister Manik Saha informed the Assembly on Monday that 2,815 Bangladeshi nationals were arrested over the past three years for illegally entering India, with 1,746 of them deported so far.
Responding to queries from MLAs Jitendra Chowdhury and Nayan Sarkar (CPI-M) and Ranjit Debbarma (Tipra Motha Party), the Chief Minister revealed that, as of October 2024, 474 detainees are lodged in various state jails, eight are in detention centers, two in a shelter home, while 585 were granted bail by the courts.
Officials stated that illegal entry often involves Indian touts and human traffickers. In the past six months alone, 625 Bangladeshi nationals and over 63 Rohingyas were apprehended by the Government Railway Police (GRP), Border Security Force (BSF), and Tripura Police at locations like the Agartala railway station.
The GRP also arrested 44 Indian human traffickers in the last five months for facilitating these illegal entries. Additionally, Chief Minister Saha informed Congress MLA Sudip Roy Barman that the National Investigation Agency (NIA) arrested 25 human traffickers in 2023.
