Agartala, June 27: Tripura’s forest minister Animesh Debbarma has highlighted the adverse impact of deforestation on the state’s environment and urged for collective action to combat deforestation and restore State’s green cover.

Speaking at the 75th State-level Vanmohotsav celebrations at Ambassa, district headquarter of Dhalai, the minister expressed grave concerns about the adverse effects of deforestation, including global warming, drying rivers, and increased flooding, which have been significantly felt in Tripura.

While addressing the gathering, Debbarma pointed out that deforestation has drastically altered the state’s climate. “The temperature in Tripura has almost doubled over the past three decades due to the depletion of forest areas. This worrying trend has led to severe consequences, with rivers running dry during off-seasons and more frequent and intense floods due to shrinking catchment areas,” he stated.

The Vanmahotsav, an annual tree-planting festival, serves as a reminder of the critical role forests play in maintaining ecological balance. This year’s event was marked by various activities, including massive tree plantation drives, awareness programs, and discussions on sustainable forest management.

Debbarma emphasized the importance of collective action to combat deforestation and restore the state’s green cover. “We must prioritize reforestation and conservation efforts to mitigate the impact of climate change and protect our natural resources for future generations,” he stated.
