Agartala, Aug 6: Tripura Chief Minister Manik Saha on Tuesday informed that the State has closed its international border with Bangladesh following political unrest and widespread violence in the neighbouring country. He said entry into India through the bordering areas of Tripura is currently not allowed.
Speaking to reporters, he said the situation along the Tripura-Bangladesh border is being closely monitored. He said he is in continuous touch with central authorities and following their instructions besides taking regular updates from the Chief Secretary, Director General of Police, Assam Rifles, and the Border Security Force (BSF).
He also emphasised that the situation in Tripura is currently stable.
He also shared that on Monday, he had reviewed the situation in Bangladesh and learnt that many people in Bangladesh are assisting the Hindu population to stay safe.
The situation in Bangladesh has a huge bearing on Tripura as it has a sizeable population that have integrated into the state’s demography following the 1971 Bangladesh Liberation War. It had sheltered nearly 16 lakh refugees from the erstwhile East Pakistan, more than its own 15 lakh population, during the war, rendering the tribals in the state a minority due to the massive influx of refugees.
Tripura is also a major route for illegal immigration from Bangladesh into India, with hundred detected every year. Many from the state continue to have relatives on the other side of the boundary.
