Agartala, Jan 18: Tripura Chief Minister Manik Saha announced that the Maharaja Bir Bikram (MBB) Airport in Agartala has been upgraded by the Airport Authority of India (AAI) from Grade III to Grade II. This development, driven by enhanced passenger movement and infrastructure improvements, marks a significant milestone for the state.
Sharing the AAI circular on Facebook, Saha expressed pride and gratitude, stating, “It is a matter of great pride that MBB Airport, Agartala, has been upgraded… My gratitude to Hon’ble PM Narendra Modi Ji for continuous support for the all-round development of Tripura.”
The circular also highlighted similar upgrades for airports in Bhopal, Madurai, Surat, Udaipur, and Vijayawada.
An official noted that MBB Airport is now the second busiest in the northeastern region after Guwahati. Prime Minister Modi inaugurated its new integrated terminal, built for ₹438 crore, on January 4, 2022. The terminal, spanning 30,000 sq. mt., can accommodate domestic and international passengers simultaneously during peak hours.
Currently, the airport handles 13 flights and over 4,000 daily passengers.
