Tripura CM defends new state emblem amid opposition criticism

Must read

Agartala, Jan 13: Amid ongoing controversy over the new emblem of the Tripura government, Chief Minister Manik Saha on Monday stated that the emblem’s design was finalized only after extensive consultation and approval from the state Cabinet. The emblem was subsequently endorsed by the Union Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) last week.

Responding to objections raised by Leader of Opposition (LoP) Jitendra Chowdhury in the state Assembly, Saha emphasized that inputs from artists and intellectuals were considered before the emblem was finalized. “The Left Front governed the state for 35 years but did not finalize an emblem. The BJP government took the initiative and followed all necessary procedures to complete the process,” he stated.

However, LoP Chowdhury, who also serves as the CPI-M state secretary and a former minister, criticized the new emblem, claiming it fails to reflect Tripura’s heritage, culture, and traditions. Chowdhury specifically opposed the use of a saffron background, arguing that Tripura, known for its lush greenery and elephant—its state animal—would have been better represented with green tones or an elephant motif.
