Tripura CM expresses concerns on rising drug use

Agartala, Feb 28: Tripura Chief Minister Manik Saha on Tuesday expressed concern on the use of intravenous drug injection among students.

The department has identified around 1100 youth as IV drug user and HIV positive.

The Chief Minister said that maximum drugs are being seized and destroyed.

“The State government has decided to set up eight drug de-addiction centres in eight districts to facilitate addicted youths becoming free from the menace”, he said.

“Drugs smuggled from Myanmar are coming to Tripura through Mizoram and Assam, which are also smuggled to Bangladesh,” the Chief Minister informed.

“Our security forces are on alert to curb the illegal drugs peddling,” he added.

He alleged that during the 35-year old regime of the Left parties, illicit cultivation of ganja (marijuana) flourished tremendously and they were not aware about the ganja cultivation in such a vast areas. He said the state government’s mission to make Tripura as “drug free state”.
