Tripura Congress slams BJP over MGNREGA shortfall, alleges rural distress

Must read

Agartala, Dec 7: The Tripura Congress has accused the BJP-led state government of failing to provide even half of the mandated workdays under the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Act (MGNREGA), causing severe financial hardship for rural communities.

Addressing the media, Tripura Congress President Ashish Kumar Saha criticized the government for providing only 40 workdays so far in the 2024-25 financial year, far short of the 100-day guarantee stipulated by the Act.

“The BJP government not only failed to fulfill its electoral promise but also denied the guaranteed 100 days of work to distressed poor people. Over 6,83,860 job cardholders from 1,30,667 families have not received even a single day of work so far under MGNREGA,” Saha alleged.

He further claimed that ruling party leaders were influencing officials to favor certain individuals for work allocation, depriving genuine poor workers of their livelihood opportunities.

Saha emphasized that, in the face of soaring prices of food grains and essential commodities, MGNREGA remains the sole source of income for many rural families, especially tribal communities. He accused the state government of failing to support these vulnerable groups during a time of economic strain.
