Agartala, Aug 21: The Government Railway Police (GRP) apprehended five women from Bihar in possession of dry marijuana at the Jirania railway station in West Tripura district, said police on Monday.
Inspector Sanjit Sen, the officer in-charge of the Agartala GR police station, stated that based on suspicions of illicit activity, a group of five women, accompanied by a local individual and four infants, was identified at the Jirania station on Sunday afternoon.
Senior officials promptly arrived at the scene and conducted an interrogation. Subsequently, a search of their belongings led to the discovery of 24.5 kilograms of ganja.
Additionally, six mobile phones and a sum of cash were seized from the suspects.
Sen added that they are currently being prepared for a court appearance, as a case under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act has been registered against them.
Recent developments reveal that in response to Tripura police’s establishment of numerous checkpoints on the national highway to combat the smuggling of drugs, including ganja in large quantities via vehicles, drug traffickers have adapted a new strategy and are now using small packets transported by human carriers, particularly women, in an attempt to avoid attracting police attention.
