Agartala, Aug 20: Incessant rain for the last 24-hours has led to severe flooding in various parts of Tripura.

The low-lying areas, particularly those adjacent to the Howrah river have been affected due to severe waterlogging.

According to reports, seven people have been killed due to severe flooding.

With rivers across the state swelling rapidly, the threat of further casualties looms large.

Meanwhile, to deal with the situation, National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) and State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) teams have been pressed into service to evacuate residents from the affected areas.

People are being transported by boats to temporary camps established by the district administration.

These camps have been equipped with all necessary amenities to accommodate the displaced.

“The situation is grim. Our house was damaged in the flood. Due to sudden increase in the water level, most of the low lying areas of locality are under water. We were rescued by the NDRF and now we have taken shelter at a relief camp,” said a women.

In Agartala, two temporary shelters have been set up in the Baldakhal area on the city’s outskirts to provide refuge to those affected by the floods.

The Assam-Agartala National Highway 8, a crucial transportation link for the state, has been inundated, leading to significant traffic disruptions. The highway is considered the lifeline of Tripura, and its flooding has added to the challenges faced by the state.

“Due to the incessant rain from last night, most of areas of Agartala have been inundated. NDRF-SDRF has been called for rescue operations. Two relief camps have been open for the flood affected people. We are doing everything possible to help the flood affected people. But some people don’t want to come to relief camps, they have taken shelter at a bridge by making a temprary tent,” said an official.

He said, “Three boats are in use to rescue the people from flood. We are taking all necessary measures to help the people.”

“South Chandrapur has been worst affected in the flood. Most of the people have taken shelter in the relief camps and foods has been distributed to them,” said the official.

Meanwhile, the authorities are working tirelessly to ensure the safety of the residents and to minimize the impact of the floods as the state braces for more rainfall.
