Agartala, July 11: Tripura Police detained more than 60 members of the National Students’ Union of India (NSUI) for attempting to block the convoy of chief minister Manik Saha in Agartala on Wednesday.

The NSUI members staged the protest against the Tripura government’s decision to shut down more than 300 schools due to low student enrolment.

“We have come here to protest against the education minister’s decision to shut down more than 300 government schools in Tripura. We have held peaceful protest but our members were forcefully detained by police. We will continue our protest against the injustice and do whatever possible to save the education system of the state,” NSUI protester Amir Hossain said.

He further said over 1,000 schools have been closed down in Tripura since the BJP came to power in 2018, and the poor students have been deprived of their right to education.

The students’ body alleged that hundreds of students from across the state had joined the peaceful protest rally before being detained by the police.

The detainees were transported to a detention centre in police vehicles.

“We have detained more than 60 NSUI members for blocking the road and heading towards chief minister’s residence. They have blocked the road for an hour which have disrupted the traffic movement. They have not taken any permission,” said Chiranjit Chakraborty, Additional Superintendent of police, West District.

Recently, a similar protest was organised by Students’ Federation of India (SFI) in Agartala.

However, the government defended the decision, stating that merging schools with lower enrolment would provide students with better teaching facilities and improved opportunities for quality education.
