Agartala, Feb 1: Tripura Chief Minister Manik Saha highlighted the state’s 73% reserve forest cover, which plays a significant role in carbon absorption, as a key factor in seeking greater financial support from the 16th Finance Commission.
During a four-day visit by the Commission, led by Chairman Arvind Panagariya, the state government proposed a 20% devolution of taxes under the forests and ecology category. Saha emphasized Tripura’s limited plain land, which hampers the establishment of large industries, making forest conservation a critical economic asset.
“We have sought 20% devolution of taxes since our vast forest lands absorb substantial amounts of carbon,” Saha told reporters.
The Finance Commission engaged with various stakeholders, including the council of ministers, panchayats, urban bodies, the Tripura Tribal Autonomous District Council (TTAADC), political leaders, and trade representatives.
Saha also mentioned discussions on infrastructure development, the 8th Pay Commission implementation, and compensation for losses due to last year’s severe floods, amounting to ₹15,000 crore. “The Commission acknowledged Tripura’s financial discipline and expressed satisfaction with the state’s performance,” he added.
