Agartala, Jan 3: The Tripura government plans to introduce a bill in the upcoming winter session of the assembly to amend the existing law and extend retirement benefits to MLAs who have served even a single day in office.
The three-day Winter session of the Tripura Assembly is set to commence on January 10.
Under the current provisions, amended in 2022, MLAs are eligible for retirement benefits, including a pension, only if they serve a minimum of four-and-a-half years. The proposed amendment seeks to significantly reduce this threshold.
Law and Parliamentary Affairs Minister Ratan Lal Nath confirmed that the session would feature three important bills, including the one aimed at modifying MLA retirement benefits. He also stated that the session would address private member resolutions, discussions on the three bills, and deliberations on various other issues.
The proposed amendment has already sparked debate, and its implications for public expenditure and political accountability are likely to be scrutinized during the session.
