Agartala, June 15: To reduce road fatalities, the Transport Department of Tripura in collaboration with the state-run Tripura Transport Corporation (TRTC) distributed free helmets to two-wheelers riders on Friday.
The initiative is a part of Road Safety Awareness Week, aimed to reduce the number of fatal accidents on the state’s roads especially among young two-wheeler riders.
Transport Minister Sushanta Chowdhury, participated in programme and distributed helmets to the young riders.
Speaking to reporters, Sushanta Chowdhury said, “Every year, around 700 to 750 accidents occur in the state, with 200 to 250 of them being fatal, primarily due to head injuries among two-wheeler riders. The programme was designed to promote the use of helmets among riders and pillion passengers, emphasizing the critical role helmets play in protecting lives,”.
“In coming days, we will distribute helmets to the people to save themselves from fatal road accidents. By wearing helmets, they will save their own life and life of their family members,” Chowdhury stated.

The state government aims to raise awareness about road safety and the importance of wearing helmets to prevent severe head injuries.
Chowdhury, alongside Superintendent of Traffic Manik Das, handed over helmets to riders, and encouraged the youth to adopt this vital safety measure. Wearing a helmet is not just a legal requirement but a crucial safety practice that can save lives and prevent injuries.
