Must read

Agartala, Oct 3: Following poor undergraduate results in the first semester, Tripura University has amended its undergraduate programme regulations.

This decision was taken in line with the National Education Policy (NEP) and to promote all candidates who submitted exam forms and paid fees, including those who could not sit for the exam on medical grounds, up to the fifth semester, regardless of their result.

The students must still complete at least 50 per cent of the credits from major papers in the first five semesters to qualify for the sixth semester examination.

In a notification, the amendments were announced which was issued by Registrar Dr Deepak Sharma on Monday. The amendments have been hailed by the BJP-led government and the Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad but drew flak from other student organisations.

The announcement followed protests from students who faced high failure rates in recent semester examinations.

“Around 8,000 students who were not allowed to move to the second semester will benefit from the decision,” said Animesh Debbarma, Director of Higher Education.

Taking to X, Tripura Chief Minister Manik Saha wrote, “In consideration of the greater interest of the students, the Tripura University has amended their Under Graduate Programme Regulation and allowed students to be promoted after each end term examination till the 5th Semester without any condition. The MBB University is also in the process of taking similar decision for the interest of the students of 2(two) affiliated Colleges under the University. I welcome this decision of the two Universities and hope it will definitely boost up the students’ enthusiasm for pursuing Higher Education.”

On the other hand, the student bodies associated with Opposition parties blamed the current situation on the NEP and its implementation allegedly without ensuring necessary infrastructure.
