Agartala, July 2: From a meagre Rs. 42 lakh in 1976, Tripura’s tax collection has surpassed Rs 3000 crore in the last fiscal and this amount is only second to Assam’s tax collection among northeastern states.

Finance Minister, Pranajit Singha Roy, said in Agartala on Tuesday that the state has been able to achieve this feat without imposing any additional tax on the citizens.

“The tax department began its operations in 1976, primarily in Agartala and Churaibari gate with a modest collection of Rs 42 lakh,” Roy said speaking at an event on the Mukhya Mantri Yuva Yogayug Yojana (MMYYY) scheme.

He said this robust collection reflects Tripura’s development and financial trajectory adding Tripura is now only behind Assam in the northeast in terms of tax collection.

During 2022-23, Tripura collected Rs 1899 crore under GST, and its Gross State Domestic Product (GSDP) was Rs. 640 billion at constant prices, marking a 10.38 percent growth over the previous year.

Roy, who also holds the Information Technology and Planning portfolios, touched on the MMYYY and informed that new graduates are provided smart phones under the scheme.

Since the scheme’s inception in 2020-21, 40,215 smart phones have been distributed to graduates from different educational institution across the state and an additional 12,000 students would get smart phones who graduated in 2021-22, earlier left out.
