Agartala, Jan 16: The Twipra Students’ Federation (TSF) staged a protest on Wednesday in front of the New Capital Complex in Agartala, demanding the inclusion of the Roman script for Kokborok in the upcoming CBSE and TBSE board examinations.
Protesters emphasized that the indigenous communities of Tripura have been advocating for the use of the Roman script alongside the Bengali script for over five decades, but their plea remains unaddressed.
TSF general secretary John Debbarma called the issue a matter of identity and pride for the indigenous people. “Despite multiple attempts, including memorandum submissions and requests for appointments with government officials, there has been no constructive response. If our demand is not fulfilled, we will continue our agitation,” he said.
The protest led to heavy security deployment, with SP West Tripura Dr. Kiran Kumar overseeing the situation. The police detained the protesters and quickly cleared the area around the high-security complex.
Kokborok, the lingua franca of Tripura’s indigenous community, is spoken by nearly 24% of the state’s population. Although it is recognized as an official language of the state, it does not have an independent script. Students currently write Kokborok exams in the Bengali script.
The TSF reiterated that the inclusion of the Roman script is crucial to preserving the cultural identity of the indigenous people and ensuring equitable representation in the educational system.
