SHILLONG, APR 23: Several civil organisations have urged the district administration of West Garo Hills to restrict the timings for entry of heavy trucks to Tura town following a recent accident where two girls were hit severely by a truck at Tura Ballongre.

A memorandum in this regard was submitted by five groups – GSU, FKJGP, AYWO, ADE and FAF – to the deputy commissioner of West Garo Hills on Monday, requesting for his immediate intervention.

“We would like to suggest…that the timings for entry of these heavy trucks to and from Tura and its adjoining areas should be restricted and the previous order of the District Administration during the tenure of Pravin Bakshi, the then Deputy Commissioner of West Garo Hills District with regards to the timing of entry of heavy trucks should be imposed at the earliest i.e. trucks should restricted from entering Tura Town and its adjoining areas from 7am-7pm,” they said.

The bodies also demanded medical expenses be borne by the authorities and a certain amount of compensation should be given to the victims and their families.

They also said that in view of the rapid growth of the Tura town the administration should restrict the movement of these trucks in and around Tura town, and thus, we also suggest that the stoppage point for these trucks must be set up at following points/junctions/places: a) Trucks coming from Baghmara/Dalu/Chokpot must be stop at Darengre, b) Trucks Coming from Paikan/Krishnai/NGH/EGH should stop at Rongram and c) Trucks coming from Mankachar/Phulbari/SWGH/ should stop at Damalgre.

The memorandum said that strict regulations with regards to over-speeding and overloading of these trucks should be put in place to minimize the damages incurred to property and life in case of any future accidents.
