Tura Cenotaph Row: Conrad announces formation of committee to study Garo Labour Corps

Shillong, March 27: Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma on Thursday announced the constitution of a committee headed by a cabinet minister, which will also have members of civil society organizations, to study and research on the Garo Labour Corps and work for promotion and development of language and culture of the Garos.

He made the announcement following his meeting with Civil Society Organizations (CSOs) in Tura on the legacy of the Garo Labour Corps. The CSOs met him to discuss the demotion of the World War I cenotaph at Lower Babupara in Tura, which has led to widespread outrage among the indigenous population of Garo Hills.

During the hour-long meeting, the CSOs raised their concern on the redevelopment of the cenotaph.

Following the public outcry over the redevelopment project, that apparently was done without public consultations, in which the cenotaph – a symbol of Garo honour and sacrifice – was demolished, the Deputy Commissioner (DC) of West Garo Hills had constituted a consultative committee, which has been rejected by CSOs due to alleged inconsistencies.

The Tura Municipal Board (TMB) and the DC of West Garo Hills have drawn a lot of criticism over the war memorial redevelopment controversy.
