TURA, Oct 6: A proud moment has engulfed the Tura Golfers Association as one of its members,Johnwell G Momin, has been qualified to represent the state of Meghalaya in the upcoming National Games 2023, to be held in Goa in November 2023 in the discipline of Golf in the Professional Players Category.
Johnwell G Momin, son of Rojinush R Marak and Promila G Momin of New Tura, Matchakolgre, Tura started playing Golf at the age of 14 after being taught and influenced into the Game of Golf by Billykid A Sangma (Ex MLA- Tura Constituency) who is an avid golfer of the Garo Hills Region himself.
Johnwell G Momin is the first Garo Golfer to play Professional level golf in India. He went to the PGTI Qualifying School in 2014 and participated in the Chief Ministers Cup 2014 held in Shillong Golf Course which is a National Championship Cup under the PGTI (Professional Golf Tour of India). Shri Johnwell G Momin has won many state level tournaments, the latest being “The Cloud 9, Summer Golf Tournament” held in Shillong Golf course in August 2023.
Johnwell G Momin, father of a one month old baby girl, is an unemployed graduate who supports his family by using his talent in Golf by working as a Golf Coach where he teaches the game to aspiring Children golfers. He also coaches adults including officers from the Armed forces and Air Force. He is currently distributing his time in Golf coaching to support his family, training for the upcoming National Games and also simultaneously preparing for the Meghalaya Police Services Mains Exams for which he has already been selected.
Speaking to this scribe, Johnwell G Momin said that Golf is a game that is not yet popular in the Garo hills region with just a handful of golfers who play the game in Durama Golf Course , a 9 Hole Golf Course, that is located, owned and maintained by the BSF Camp in Danakgre, Tura. One of the objectives of Tura Golfers Association is to promote and popularize the game of Golf among the community by organizing training camps in the Schools of Tura for which they have sought help and financial support from the Sports Department.
