Tura, Sept 25: Tura Government College Students’ Union (TGCSU) has said the college is “overcrowded” and sought a new building to cater to the growing student community.
TGCSU President, Rangku B Marak, in a memorandum to the Directorate of Higher Education and Technical Education on Tuesday, has highlighted that the existing infrastructure of the college is insufficient and the college is overcrowded.
“The college has seen a significant increase in student enrolment, resulting in overcrowded classrooms, inadequate facilities, and limited space for both academic and extracurricular activities,” Marak said.
He said “due to lack of space”, students and the faculty are facing challenges in receiving proper education. “This is also affecting the overall performance and reputation of the college.”
“It is imperative that a new building be constructed to meet the demands of the growing student community and to improve the academic environment,” Marak said in the memorandum.
College uniform demanded
In another letter, which was sent to Directorate of Higher Education and Technical Education on September 20, 2024, the student body has sought introduction of a uniform in the college, claiming that the lack of a standard dress code has led to disparities among students.
“A uniform can foster a sense of belonging and unity among students while promoting discipline and reducing distractions. Additionally, it can create a positive atmosphere of seriousness and focus, helping to instill a sense of responsibility and professionalism among students. Introducing a uniform would also eliminate socio-economic differences, as all students will be dressed alike, promoting equality and reducing peer pressure related to fashion or brand-consciousness,” the student union said in the letter.
