Tura, July 10: After weeks and months of unleashing its deadly infection across the villages and rural region of Garo Hills, the Covid-19 infection has returned to strike with a deadly impact on Tura town.
Two elderly citizens of Tura lost their battle against the disease at Tura civil hospital on Friday. What was more worrying was the fact that neither of the victims had been vaccinated against the disease.
While one victim is an 83-year-old woman hailing from the locality of Rongkhon Songgital, the other is a 63-years-old man of Araimile, Tura.
The elderly woman was co-morbid with other ailments when she got infected and later became serious with pneumonia.
The elderly gentleman also died after suffering from Covid pneumonia in the hospital.
West Garo Hills Deputy commissioner, Ram Singh has been pushing for people to get vaccinated at the earliest to beat the disease and halt it in its tracks.
He also revealed that almost all cases of deaths from Covid-19 have taken place among people who were not vaccinated.
Along with the loss of two precious lives in Tura, 73 new positive cases were detected on Friday. The total active cases have touched the 556 mark on Friday, and health watchers doubt the numbers will go down anytime soon.
A bustling locality like Hawakhana, in the heart of Tura town, saw the detection of six positive cases during active surveillance conducted by health teams during the day.
