Tura MP claims Meghalaya not included in centre’s flood control projects

Must read

TURA, July 12: Tura Lok Sabha MP Saleng A Sangma on Friday alleged that Meghalaya failed to get included for flood control projects by the central government whereas Manipur, Mizoram and Nagaland received schemes relating to the natural calamity.

The Tura MP, who toured the flood affected plains belt region of Rajabala and Phulbari also blamed the state government of Conrad K Sangma alleging it failing to take up the issue with New Delhi.

Sangma took to a speed boat to cross different flood affected areas visiting some of the inundated areas of Chartbatipara, Haribanga, Maulakandi and adjoining areas.

While interacting with some of the local leaders in the flood affected region, the Tura MP leveled the allegation of Meghalaya not being a beneficiary of flood control projects.

“There has been no proposal for Meghalaya every year and only relief by way of rations are being provided. It is as if Meghalaya did not suffer from any floods all this while,” alleged Saleng Sangma.

Pointing to data in his possession, the Tura MP said that states like Manipur received 22 flood related projects and even lesser impacted states like Nagaland got 11 projects and Mizoram 2 projects.

Interestingly, as the Congress MP raises the pitch against the state government over the flood situation, Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma has gone one step ahead- having toured the flood affected Rajabala-Phulbari-Tikrikilla zone a week earlier.

The chief minister visited several relief centres, inspected the rations being provided and also briefed the government officials tasked with looking after the affected people in the flooded region.

Sources from the chief minister’s office say that the state government has already prepared a detailed report to present to the centre on the flood mitigation projects required for the state and chief minister Conrad K Sangma is expected to meet with central ministers in this regard.
