Tura, June 1: The ongoing police investigation into the accident that occurred at Rari in North Garo Hills in the early hours of 4th May taking away the young life of a 20 year old girl is soon to get completed and the report is expected to unravel the truth behind the disappearance and subsequent death of the victim.
The incident would have passed off as just another tragic accident wherein a young life was lost, except that the victim was a civilian who disappeared from her rented house in Tura and ended up in a vehicle that was being used by police from one of the Garo Hills districts.
The vehicle in question, a white bolero that had been requisitioned by South Garo Hills police left Baghmara for Shillong via Tura on May 4th. One of the two police constables tasked with taking official papers from the district to Shillong had driven the vehicle which was to be a return journey on the same day. Police sources claim that the constable and the young girl knew each other well.
The vehicle was returning from Shillong when it met with an accident at Rari in North Garo Hills at 4 O’clock early morning of May 4th. The girl died on the spot while three others persons, including the two constables, sustained injuries.
Family of the victim demanded an inquiry after it was found that she had gone missing from her rented house in Dakopgre the same day the vehicle came to Tura en route to Shillong.
There are allegations leveled and suspicions raised that it could have been a case of kidnapping, rape and murder.
A post mortem has been conducted and Tura police which investigated the case are soon to wrap up their probe and submit its findings.
While one angle of the story alleges abduction and murder, she was last seen by her house owner on the morning of her disappearance, another indicates that the victim knew the constable who drove the ill-fated vehicle and accompanied him to Shillong.
The victim was reportedly in the vehicle when it reached Shillong and returned by it the same evening.
On the return journey, the vehicle picked up two other passengers, a police commando who was heading to his village near Krishnai Assam to attend a wedding the same evening, and another retired policeman’s adult son coming home for the holidays.
The police commando got off at the wedding venue while the other occupants who are reported to have briefly attended the event moved on their journey when tragedy struck as the driver lost control in the night fog and veered off the road.
The case has turned sensational as no one recalls knowing about the victim’s whereabouts after she was last spotted by her landlord at the house in the morning hours prior to her disappearance.
To make matters worse, questions remain unanswered as to how she boarded a vehicle requisitioned by police when it is prohibited to ferry other passengers while on official duty.
