Tura, May 3: The “Play On” Inter School Sports Meet, a vibrant grassroots sports initiative, culminated on Saturday at the Don Bosco School grounds in Tura, with Tura Public School proudly lifting the trophy for the ‘best overall school’ and Don Bosco dominating both Basketball and Football finals.
The grand finale of the meet was graced by D. D. Shira, Director of Sports and Youth Affairs, along with Fr. Threnius N Sangma, Principal of Don Bosco School, Jasper P Marak, former Deputy Director of Sports and Youth Affairs and Pranab Bhowmik, Principal of Tura Public School. The final day featured basketball and football finals, along with Esports championship.

The basketball court witnessed dominant performances, particularly from Don Bosco Hr. Sec. School Tura. In the girls’ category, they showcased their prowess with an impressive 46–5 victory over St. Mary’s Hr. Sec. School. The boys’ match saw a similarly commanding performance, with Don Bosco Hr. Sec. Tura securing a 51–21 win against Monfort Center for Education.

The football final delivered an intense showdown between Don Bosco Hr. Sec. School Rongkhon and Tura Public School. Don Bosco Rongkhon made an early breakthrough, scoring just minutes into the first half. Despite Tura Public School being awarded two free kicks and a penalty opportunity, they were unable to convert their chances.
Don Bosco Rongkhon maintained their pressure in the second half, netting another goal, with a subsequent third being ruled offside. The match concluded with Don Bosco Rongkhon clinching a decisive 3–0 victory.
The prize distribution ceremony saw guests awarding winners in various athletic events, including the 100m and 400m races, relay races, long jump, high jump, and Tug of War. While Don Bosco schools excelled in football and key basketball categories, Tura Public School’s consistent performance across various disciplines ultimately earned them the title of the best school in the competition.
Individual brilliance was also celebrated during the ceremony. In basketball, James Tirkey from Don Bosco Hr. Sec. Tura was crowned the Top Scorer of the Tournament in the boys’ category, having amassed over 61 points. In the girls’ category, Yatchi N Sangma, also from Don Bosco Hr. Sec. Tura, took the Top Scorer title with over 19 points.

Tengsim K Sangma, the captain of the Don Bosco Rongkhon team, was recognized as the best player in the football discipline, and Akangesa A. Sangma from Tura Public School was recognized as the overall best athlete.
In Esports (EAFC25) championship, Micah Chase B Sangma from Sherwood SchoolTura took the first place and Ambian Degado M Sangma from Aerovile School was awarded the second place.
The sports extravaganza, a collaborative effort between Artsourced and the Directorate of Sports and Youth Affairs, witnessed spirited participation from nine schools across the region over several Fridays and Saturdays, since its launch on April 4.
It provided a dynamic platform for student athletes from various schools to compete in Basketball, Football, Esports, and Athletics. This initiative aimed to cultivate a robust sporting culture among school students in the region, fostering physical well-being, teamwork, and discipline from an early age.
