Tura, May 6: Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma has given the go ahead for the construction of Tura’s first ever major bio-waste incinerator that will be used to destroy all hazardous and infectious medical waste at a single place to protect against soil and water contamination.
The Bio-Medical waste incinerator will be set up in a plot of land located in the premises of the Inter State Bus Terminus at Chasingre, near Tura. The cost of the incinerator is Rs 4 crore and the project has been cleared for timely completion.

“The incinerator is extremely important and very much needed for safe disposal of medical waste because over the past one year a lot of bio medical waste has been accumulating that needs to be safely disposed off. The project has already been sanctioned and work should complete within a couple of months time,” assured the chief minister.
First Oxygen plant for Garo Hills hospitals at Jengjal
As thousands of patients across the country suffer from oxygen shortage in hospitals and major medical institutions, Meghalaya is preparing for any eventuality in case of a serious spike from covid.
While a plant that manufactures crucial oxygen for medical treatment in Byrnihat town of ri-Bhoi district has been directed to up their production and stockpile sufficient number of the life saving item, further down in the Western part of the state, another oxygen plant is being prepared.
Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma on Thursday arrived at Baljek airport area of jengjal town in West Garo Hills, 30 kms from Tura, to inspect the site where an oxygen cryogenic plant will be set up to cater to the medical needs of the entire Garo Hills region.
Jengjal is the gateway to Tura, Williamnagar, Baghmara and even West Khasi Hills.
“This oxygen cryogenic plant can provide the requirements for all five districts of Garo Hills and even to the neighbouring West Khasi Hills district. Jengjal is a very strategic location and work on the plant is going to start from tomorrow itself,” informed the chief minister.
Inspection of Tura hospitals
The chief minister visited two hospitals in Tura, namely Maternity and Child Hospital and Tura Civil Hospital before inspecting the Covid care centre at SMELC building in Dakopgre. He also reviewed the preparedness of the medical teams and administration during a meeting with officials at Tura circuit house.

“A review meeting was held today with members of the high level covid committee for West Garo Hills and Tura constituency and we discussed the situation and preparedness of our health infrastructure. As of now it looks satisfactory but we want to ensure additional requirements are also met,” mentioned the chief minister while interacting with mediapersons.
He raised an important piece of advice telling everyone that the most critical point was to ensure the virus is contained and not able to spread. He also said that another step to contain the infection raise was to continue with the vaccinations taking place and assured all that there is sufficient vaccine doses for all people in the age group of 45 and above.
