Tura, Feb 9: The music scene in Tura is about to get a global makeover.
In a bid to spotlight the city’s emerging musical talent, the Rhythm School of Music hosted a groundbreaking ABRSM (Associated Board of the Royal Schools of Music) workshop-cum-career guidance event at the Prime Hub office in Najing Bazaar on Saturday. The session, aimed at both aspiring musicians and parents, was a powerful reminder that Tura’s musical potential is bound for the world stage.
Affiliated with ABRSM, one of the most prestigious music education organizations globally, the Rhythm School is planning to introduce ABRSM exams later this year. This move is poised to offer local musicians an invaluable platform for global recognition.
The workshop was led by Sonia Khan, the Indian representative of ABRSM and a well-regarded name in the music world. She is also the Managing Director of the India National Youth Orchestra & Chorus, Advisor for UPSC’s Music & Theatre Division, and Director of the BRICS Alliance. Her extensive experience made her the perfect guide for the workshop, which provided an in-depth understanding of ABRSM exams and the vital role music education plays in a child’s overall development.
In her presentation, Sonia explained how ABRSM exams, offered from prep test to diploma levels, serve as an essential foundation for fostering musical skills and a lifelong love for music. Beyond talent development, she highlighted how playing an instrument boosts brain development, enhancing skills like memory, motor coordination, and even mathematical abilities—skills that set students up for success across disciplines.
Perhaps most inspiring was Sonia’s vision for Tura’s musical future. “There’s so much untapped potential here,” she said. “We could have a Tura ensemble, a guitar group, even an orchestra. We’re here to put Tura on the global map.” With ABRSM’s support, she envisions a flourishing music culture in Tura, one that rivals some of the best music programs in the world.
The workshop also featured performances by students from the Rhythm School, offering a taste of Tura’s growing musical talent. These performances not only demonstrated the school’s commitment to fostering creativity but also gave a glimpse of what’s to come when Tura becomes an ABRSM exam center.
Founded over 150 years ago, ABRSM is one of the world’s largest and most respected music education organizations, with over 900,000 students across the globe. The exams, which span all levels of proficiency, are recognized internationally and are seen as a hallmark of musical achievement. In India, prestigious institutions such as Woodstock School, The British School, and La Martiniere College are already integrating ABRSM exams into their curricula.
