Tura, Aug 04: In another breakthrough after a lull of few days, police have arrested another key accused instigator, Tapseng Sangma, in the July 24, 2023 attack on the CM’s Mini Secretariat in Tura. The arrest was made on Friday from his residence in Williampur village of Tikrikilla, West Garo Hills.
Tapseng Sangma is believed to have played a pivotal role in inciting the crowds that resulted in a stone-pelting episode on the evening of July 24, when the Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma was inside the CM’s Mini Secretariat, holding discussions with representatives from various protesting organizations led by ACHIK.
The arrest came after authorities obtained a video showing Tapseng Sangma delivering an alleged fiery speech, encouraging the gathering crowd to engage in violence. The video footage was recorded moments before the stone-pelting commenced.
The July 24 incident saw tensions running high as various organizations including NGOs, pressure groups, and civil societies drawn from parts of Garo Hills were eagerly waiting for the Chief Minister to make major announcement on the demands for Winter Capital in Tura and retrospective implement of the job roster system/backlog policy. When the meeting between the CM and the NGOs took over 3 hours to conclude, the situation escalated when a groups of vested interests with political affiliations incited the mob to turn violent, pelting stones and causing injuries to police personnel and damaging properties.
Since the night of July 24, West Garo Police have been going after the major instigators of the violence, making a total of 49 arrests so far.
