Tura, July 26: In a major development in the Tura unrest case, one of the key accused instigator Salseng R. Marak, who allegedly urged protestors to burn down the ACHIK campsite and target police and the delegation holding talks with the Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma, has been arrested.
Police had been searching for him since Monday night, following the 3-hour long violence outside the CM’s mini-secretariat in Tura when the Chief Minister was holding a peaceful meeting with leaders of ACHIK and GSMC and other civil bodies on their demands of winter capital in Tura and retrospective implementation of roster system or a backlog policy.
Acting on a specific input, a special police team made the arrest from Damalgre, where Marak was hiding. Seeing the police, he tried to escape, but was caught by the swift action of the police.
Marak had allegedly delivered an inflammatory speech, playing a pivotal role in inciting the mob to attack the venue where the CM was holding the crucial meeting. 18 policemen were injured in the violence and 21 vehicles damaged.
The total arrests in connection with the Tura violence has gone up to 28 people, so far.
The accused hails from Selsella and had contested the MDC elections of the GHADC unsuccessfully from Siju-Baghmara area of South Garo Hills reportedly on an UDP ticket.
Residing as a tenant in Dakopgre, opposite Gate No 2 of the Doordarshan TV tower, he had applied for a Congress ticket to contest from Selsella in 2023 Assembly elections.
The Congress, however, rejected his candidature for Selsella. He allegedly joined the Trinamool Congress (TMC) after the Congress rejection.
The accused is also under the radar of wildlife authorities for his alleged involvement in the trade of endangered monitor lizards in an illegal cross border smuggling racket with Bangladesh.
