TURA, July 3: A woman and a man have been arrested by Tura police after they duped a lady customer of Rs 10 lakh 50 thousand rupees with promise of selling a plot of land which, in actual reality, had already been sold to another person. The arrested couple had forged land documents to obtain the money from the victim, it was revealed by police during investigation.
Two persons had approached the woman victim to claim that one Shri Brenny Bithon Basin Ch. Marak had a plot of land at Bokmagre, Tura which was going for sale.
The two accused also showed the land to the complainant as well as a Land Patta marked as PP No. 63 and claimed that out of this land, they wanted to sell 1B-0K10L only for Rs. 14,00,000/- (Rupees Fourteen Lakh).
The unsuspecting woman gave the two accused a sum of Rs. 10,50,000/- (Rupees Ten Lakh Fifty Thousand) for purchase of the land.
It was only afterwards that the woman came to know that the said land had already been sold to a different person.
When she confronted the two persons who took her money, they agreed to refund the money given to them.
But the Rs 10 lakh, 50,000/- was never paid and the victim had to approach the police. It was suspected that the accused had shown her a forged Land Patta.
“On receipt of information, a case was immediately registered vide Tura PS Case No. 140(7)22 u/s 417/419/420/423/471 /467/34 IPC and investigation was entrusted to UBSI Tenny G Momin. Yesterday, both accused persons namely Smti Noballina S. Marak, W/o Shri Arbillin Ch. Marak, R/o Danakgre-A, PO – Araimile, PS – Tura, West Garo Hills and Shri Brenny Bithon Basil Ch. Marak S/o Shri Bruceline N. Sangma, R/o Upper Babupara, PS – Tura, West Garo Hills were arrested and forwarded to court. Investigation continues and chargesheet shall be filed soon,” informed SP Vivekanand Singh Rathore.
Awareness drive on human trafficking and cyber crime
Meanwhile, to create awareness about the rising cases of cyber crime and human trafficking, West Garo Hills police conducted a programme on Cyber Crime & Human Trafficking on Saturday at Bondukmali village in Tikrikilla. The programme was well received with as many as 200 villagers taking part and being made aware of the dangers of these criminal cases and how to prevent them. Villagers raised various questions on both issues and a team from Tikrikilla police presented answers and means to thwart such incidents.
