Shillong, Jan 29: Relief is on the horizon for the residents of Tura, as the ambitious Greater Tura Urban Water Supply Scheme promises to transform the water landscape of this rapidly growing town in Garo Hills. With an investment of ₹398.48 crore, the project aims to provide a consistent and adequate water supply to over one lakh people across 6,000 families.

The scheme, expected to be completed within 24 to 36 months, comes at a crucial time when water scarcity continues to affect daily life in Tura. Meghalaya’s Minister for Public Health Engineering (PHE), Marcuise Marak, highlighted the urgency of the project.

“Despite three phases of the Tura Water Supply Scheme being completed, the town’s demand kept rising, especially as water was also distributed to peripheral villages under the Jal Jeevan Mission. The supply just wasn’t enough,” Marak explained.

The fourth phase, branded as the Greater Tura Urban Water Supply Scheme, will involve constructing a major reservoir downstream of the Ganol River to pump and distribute water across 37 localities in the town.

Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma recently laid the foundation stone for the project, signalling the state’s determination to resolve Tura’s water crisis. Marak assured residents that the project, once completed, will supply adequate water to every household.

Tura’s strategic growth as a hub in Garo Hills has made this development critical. Many residents have long relied on alternative sources like private tankers and makeshift storage solutions to meet their needs.

“We’re hopeful that this project will finally end our water struggles,” said a local resident.
