Agartala, July 9: In a shocking incident of child molestation, the husband of a tutor has been arrested for allegedly raping a minor girl in Kumarghat, Unakoti district, Tripura.
According to the police, the 11-year-old girl, a resident of Ratyabari area under the jurisdiction of Kumarghat police station, used to visit the house of a female teacher in the same locality for private tuition. Taking advantage of the teacher’s absence, the accused, identified as Har Kumar Debnath, repeatedly sexually assaulted the minor girl.
The victim’s father filed a First Information Report (FIR) with the police, leading to the arrest of the accused.
Inspector Sankar Saha, the officer in-charge of Kumarghat police station, said, “We have registered a case based on the complaint filed by Biplab Paul, the father of the 11-year-old victim. The girl used to go to the house of a female teacher for tuition, where her husband raped her on multiple occasions. The girl was threatened with dire consequences if she disclosed the incidents to anyone, which is why she kept silent. However, when her parents persisted in questioning her refusal to attend tuition classes, she finally narrated the ordeal.”
Inspector Saha added, “We have filed an FIR under Section 376, 376/AB of the Indian Penal Code (IPC), and Section 6 of the Protection of Children from Sexual Offenses (POCSO) Act. The accused, Har Kumar Debnath, aged 46, was swiftly arrested within an hour of the FIR being filed. He underwent a medical examination, and according to the victim’s statement, the incidents of rape occurred on June 26 and July 5.”
According to police the accused has confessed to his crimes and the victim has also undergone a medical examination.
The accused was produced before the district and sessions court of Unakoti for legal proceedings on Sunday.
The court has remanded the accused to judicial custody, and he will be produced in court again after 14 days.
