Guwahati, Nov 28: Assam police have arrested two of the three individuals accused of sexually assaulting a Class 9 student in Demow, Sivasagar district.
The main accused, Sunil Tapan and Bhaiti alias Luther Tapan, have been taken into custody for further interrogation. However, one suspect remains at large.
The incident, which occurred on November 22, has sparked widespread outrage, particularly over the police’s initial failure to arrest the accused.
On November 27, several organizations staged a massive protest in Sivasagar, demanding the immediate arrest of all culprits. Protesters, holding banners and placards, raised slogans such as “Hang the rapists!” and “Shame on Demow Police for their inaction!”
“We demand life imprisonment for the culprits. My daughter can no longer step out of the house because of the incident. This has ruined her life,” said the victim’s mother.
