Guwahati, Dec 11: Assam has proven its grassroots governance prowess, with two of its gram panchayats receiving prestigious accolades at this year’s National Panchayat Awards. The Jengrai Gram Panchayat from Majuli district was honored with the Deen Dayal Upadhyay Panchayat Satat Vikas Puraskar and a cash prize of ₹1 crore in the “Child-Friendly Panchayat” category. Meanwhile, the Bebejia Demow Bangthai Gram Panchayat from Nagaon district earned the coveted Nanaji Deshmukh Sarvottam Panchayat Satat Vikas Puraskar along with a ₹1.25 crore award for being the best gram panchayat.
Jengrai: A Model for Child-Centric Development
In Jengrai, children are at the heart of community development. This gram panchayat has made landmark strides in child welfare, education, and protection. It has eradicated child labor and eliminated child abuse and other crimes against children — a feat that underscores its commitment to safeguarding children’s rights.
The backbone of Jengrai’s success lies in its robust network of 21 primary schools and multiple Anganwadi centers. These facilities provide vital early education and nutritional support, laying a strong foundation for young learners. The emphasis on physical well-being is equally commendable, with 7 playgrounds, a volleyball court, and 2 newly constructed stadiums that encourage sports and recreational activities for children. The holistic approach has created a safe, engaging, and nurturing environment for young minds to grow and thrive.
Bebejia Demow Bangthai: Assam’s Best Gram Panchayat
Bebejia Demow Bangthai Gram Panchayat in Nagaon district has been recognized as the best-performing panchayat in India, bagging the prestigious Nanaji Deshmukh Sarvottam Panchayat Satat Vikas Puraskar. This honor reflects its excellence in overall governance, sustainable development, and community welfare. While specific details of its initiatives remain under wraps, the recognition highlights the gram panchayat’s capacity to deliver impactful governance, ensure effective service delivery, and achieve sustainable development goals (SDGs) at the local level.
